First, Irving’s narrator is the figure he uses as editor and narrator for many of his writings: Diedrich Knickerbocker. We are led to believe this, but Irving’s narrative does not confirm it at any point.Īnd two aspects of Irving’s story make it difficult for us to determine whether the events of the story are meant to be taken as genuinely supernatural or as a hoax perpetrated by Brom Bones. But what does the story mean? Should we view it as an out-and-out ‘Gothic’ tale, or as a more realist tale which merely draws upon Gothic elements? Part of the problem is that we cannot be entirely sure that the ghost of the headless horseman whom Crane encounters towards the end of the narrative really is just Brom Bones in disguise, determined to give his love rival a fright and clear the way for him to woo Katrina for himself. ![]()

And did I mention the endpapers? Genius! Willems finds the right combination of text and art silliness and makes it all look easy. ![]() Of course, all ends well (assuming you were rooting for Goldilocks and not the dinosaurs) and Willems turns this retelling into a fable. It seems that pudding-filled little girls are the bon bon of choice for this species. The premise is that three dinosaurs (Papa, Mama, and a smaller one who is visiting from Norway) set a trap for Goldilocks, hoping to lure her to their house with chocolate pudding and then eat her when she falls asleep in one of their beds. Happily, just about all the gags in this book are targeted straight across at a folk-tale–knowledgeable elementary school audience. I'm okay with winks up to a point, but I don't like it when too many are aimed up over the heads of the kids. Like lots of fractured folktales, this is full of winks. ![]() Since this one is by Mo Willems, it had me at "Once upon a time." Their awesomely offbeat humor takes a front seat in their podcast, Stitching n Junk, where you can find interviews, shout-outs, stitching anecdotes, and Jamie pronouncing words in a British-y fashion while Bridget snickers. :) Oh, and did I mention? Jamie and Bridget are hilarious. Jamie and Bridget are both cross-stitchers who take a very traditional art and turn it around so that it perfectly reflects their humor, talent, and let's face it, oddness. It's a taste of everything (and I do mean everything) in the contemporary needlework scene - but all carefully curated to make you think and show you something new. What I love about MrXStitch as a site and community is that you can find every kind of embroidery there: cute, sweet, edgy, weird, technical, traditional, snarky and racy. Another point that Tiger Math makes which I agree with, is its focus on formation of good study habits. ![]() Other existing math workbooks do not give you that big picture view of how things are layed out, making it difficult for parents to pick out which book would be suitable for their children. It is easy for parents to have a global view of the entire curriculum in terms of how the different math topics are layed out in sequential order. Tiger Math is a systematic math workbook series that stands out compared to other existing workbooks that are currently on the market. ![]() ![]() ![]() Queen Victoria would recognize her as an Equal.
